Sleep to the doves

“Sleep to The Doves Cou-Rou”, black chlorite/ limestone, 10” x 15” x 11”, $2250.00
The title for this piece was taken from a passage in Rudolfo Anaya’s, “Bless Me Ultima”. The bird forms were modeled from the opening leaves of a desert pod plant, split apart to become kindred doves, and carved from the same block of stone to accentuate their relationship. The doves are secured to a limestone plate with a drinking pool, and act as the handle to open their tiered limestone urn.

Pas de deux

“Pas de Deux”, companion cremation urn, limestone/ chlorite/ glass/ bronze, 8” x 15” x 10”, $3000.00
This is a work in which two figures come together in an eternal dance. Both forms were modeled from broken shell parts of the same species. Although different in shape, their strong relationship is notable. The pieces were carved in limestone, and placed onto a pedestal with a reflective top surface to accentuate the dance.

Agave

“Agave”,black chlorite/ marble, 16” x 6” x 6”, 15lbs., 2002, $1750.00
A desert agave plant whose leaves mature as they rotate in a counter clockwise direction inspired this work. The leaves expand in overlapping circles and tilt backward until they touch the ground. Three essential parts of this process are depicted in “Agave”, with a central core just beginning to open, to a fully open and outward leaning leaf. The threesome are firmly secured to the top of their marble container, opened by gently holding the leaves at their waist.

“Dolphin Pod”, white maple/ granite, 11” x 10” x 5”, 15lbs., 2002,  $1500.00
“Dolphin Pod” carved in white maple, was inspired by a pod plant found in eastern Texas. It appears to be a comfortably wrapped figure, or in some eyes, the head of a dolphin.

Infinite wait

“Infinite Wait”, black chlorite/ limestone/ bronze, 20” x 15” x 7”, $1750.00
A group of Canada Geese circles a wetland pool and come in for a landing, delicately avoiding the hundreds already in place. Individuals then rise on the water to aerate their wings. This fluffing movement creates a beautiful form, the essence of which I tried to capture in three-dimensional design and stone carving. The delicate figure has been mounted on plate bronze that acts as the top for its vertical limestone urn.

Pasa Por Aqui

“Pasa Por Aquí”, ebony alabaster/ limestone/ bronze, 18” x 11” x 5”, $2000.00
Organic animal and plant forms found in the high desert regions of New Mexico have provided many of my sculptural ideas. “Pasa Por Aquí” is one of several pieces that have been designed from beautiful shapes discovered in animal bones. This piece has evolved through two previous works from the same anatomical model, each time further extracting the nonessentials.

Presence

“Presence”, steatite/ bronze/ limestone, 11” x 12” x 8”, $2250.00
Broken shells combed from northern California beaches have often served as design models. I saw a figure rising from what appeared to be the bowl of a chalice in one of these tiny shell parts. “Presence” was designed from this form and further developed in its carving from a stone with design ideas of its own. Its natural balance has been preserved by attaching it to a small piece of polished bronze, which fits into the top of its trapezoidal limestone container.

Shell

“Shell”, ebony alabaster/ marble, 12” x 9” x 4”, 12lbs., 2002,  $1500.00
I became fascinated with broken seashell parts on a trip to the Caribbean. Here, one finds the essential structure of the shell having been torn apart, but smoothed over time by wind, water and sand. Some of the resultant forms are quite beautiful, and their intrinsic strength has already been proven by the elements. “Shell” represents all of these qualities in a delicate figure resting on its white marble container.

“The Ties That Bind”, limestone/ black chlorite, 11” x 10” x 9”, $2250.00
A broken shell served as the model for this work in which a continuous edge outlines and defines its substantial being, while its overlapping course frames an elegant negative space. Carved from a cream colored limestone, the form is bonded to a contrasting black stone base, forming the top for its sculpted container.

Vessel

“Vessel”, chlorite/ limestone/ bronze, 13” x 10” x 6”, $2000.00
The shell of an opening plant pod appeared to be the essence of a water vessel. “Vessel” was designed as a serene transformation of this form, and carved in black stone to preserve its purity. The vessel is docked on a piece of honed limestone, the two acting as the handle for their black stone container.
