Broken shells combed from northern California beaches have often served as design models. I saw a figure rising from what appeared to be the bowl of a chalice in one of these tiny shell parts. Presence was designed from this form and further developed in its carving from a stone with design ideas of its own. Its natural balance has been preserved by attaching it to a small piece of polished bronze, which fits into the top of its trapezoidal limestone container.
